Charitable fundraising at Equiom
Monday 11 September 2017
Throughout the year, staff across the Equiom Group are committed to playing a part in our local communities by getting involved in various fundraising efforts to support worthwhile causes. The past few months have been particularly busy given our support at a number of key events.
In June, we hosted our annual Ladies Lunch in Jersey with the support of Bedell Cristin. The event featured a charity lunch at the Island’s exclusive Longueville Manor Hotel with a special appearance from BBC Antiques Roadshow expert Eric Knowles, who hosted an auction and luxury prize draw. Together we raised more than £21,000 for Cancer Research UK, an incredible achievement for such a great cause.
Our Jersey and Isle of Man offices also supported the UK Cancer Research Relay for Life. In Jersey, as main sponsors, we helped to promote the event in the lead up and on the day. It was a fantastic weekend and has, to date, nearly reached its target of raising £50,000. The Isle of Man office entered a team in the August event, which saw more than 850 people take part with a record entry of 60 teams. Our team of 15 organised a number of fundraising activities and, as a result, raised more than £5,000.
Finally, teams across all of our offices have been taking part in the ‘100,000 Mile Challenge’. Between 11 March and 31 December staff are collecting sponsorship and funds pledged by Equiom based on the number of tracked miles completed. The initiative supports charities all around the world, for example our business in the Middle East, Links Group has pledged to walk 15,000 miles in support of Al Jalilia Foundation, raising funds for breast cancer, and has already completed 10,000. Singapore is in the lead however having clocked an impressive 12,000 miles to date, a great result which is likely to raise a substantial amount for Children Cancer Foundation (CCF) in Singapore. We look forward to seeing how this progresses, how many global miles we clock up and the grand total raised for our chosen charities. Stay tuned to our social media channels for further updates.
Equiom’s ongoing support for the community extends to sponsorships of local sports teams and events that help raise money for the causes we care about. For the next three years, Equiom is the official sponsor for the Isle of Man Junior Cycling Team, a group of eight talented 16–18 year olds. It has been been amazing to watch the team develop and celebrate in all of their successes, competing in events around the world against top riders. We look forward to the next season.
Cancer research and support has always been a key cause we provide backing for. In October, our Isle of Man and Channel Islands offices will be undertaking various activities to support Breast Cancer Awareness month. In the Middle East, Links Group will be sponsoring ‘Brest Friends Health and Wellness Festival’, a large-scale family event to raise funds for Dubai’s only breast cancer support group. In November, our charity committee will be busy organising fundraising efforts for Children in Need day. We will also be taking part in the world’s biggest coffee morning in support of Macmillan Cancer Support. Dress-Down Fridays have proved to be particularly fruitful for fundraising and the funds from this year’s initiative will be tallied in October.
In addition to charity support, our offices are committed to helping young people achieve their career goals. Our Scotland office has been working closely with Inverness College for a number of years to offer work placements to young people in the region and continues to support local students with practice interviews, reviewing CVs and assisting with subject choices. In the coming months, we will be working to advise young people in Jersey who are choosing a career by offering CV workshops and career mentoring, all as part of our sponsorship of the Jersey College for Girls Foundation. We hope to roll this out in other jurisdictions worldwide to keep the movement of supporting young people going.
Corporate social responsibility is a global initiative and we hope that our continued support for these causes will resonate around the world. The examples above are only a sample of the causes we have supported this year, with lots of games, sporting fun and cake consumption (!) along the way. The charity committees across our international offices have got plenty planned for the rest of the year and we will continue to share our success stories along the way.
