Equiom's charitable support 2015

Friday 04 December 2015

We are always proud to play our part in the community and support worthy causes in all of our jurisdictions. In the past few months, Equiom employees have raised an astonishing amount of money for charity through partaking in a range of activities.

On a sporting front, in May this year a team from the Isle of Man office raised £15,425 for Manx Breast Cancer Support Group and Hospice Isle of Man by participating in the Microgaming Triathlon Festival Weekend. The entrants competed in three teams of three and as six individuals. Equiom’s Global Chief Executive Officer, Sheila Dean, took part in the swimming leg for one of the teams and was extremely proud of the wider team for exceeding its original fundraising target of £10,000.

This was followed in June by the Equiom 500 Mile Challenge which saw a team of 21 Equiom employees from the Isle of Man and Jersey offices raise more than £4,000 for Manx charity Craig’s Heartstrong Foundation by walking a combined total of 772 miles in the Isle of Man’s famous Parish Walk. The annual walking race passes through every parish in the Island with a total time limit of 24 hours. Electronic timing devices are used to track participants’ progress and they can choose to finish at any parish checkpoint along the way. Special congratulations go to Andy Limbrick (Jersey office) and Sandra Finnegan (Isle of Man office) who completed the entire 85-mile circuit. Having exceeded the 500-mile target this year, the team has set a new target of 1,000 miles for next year’s Parish Walk!

Continuing the sporting theme, a team of four keen golfers from our Guernsey office took part in Autism Guernsey’s third annual charity golf event in September. While their golfing skills didn’t bag them a win, they were proud to contribute to a worthy local cause.

Ladies' Lunches have proved to be incredibly successful fundraisers. Two lunches have been held in recent months, raising a combied total of £36,000. The first, in May, took place at Longueville Manor in Jersey and raised more than £15,000 for Cancer Research UK. It was attended by 61 ladies and hosted by Group CEO Sheila, along with Equiom (Jersey) Limited’s Non-Executive Director, Heather Bestwick. It was organised as part of Equiom’s support of Cancer Research UK during 2015, which included sponsorship of Jersey’s Relay for Life in July - a volunteer-led Cancer Research UK event for which Equiom’s Group Business Development Director, Richard Tribe, is Chairman of the committee.

More recently, a similar lunch was held at Portofino in the Isle of Man, again hosted by Sheila. It was attended by 92 ladies who raised an incredible £21,000 for the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group, for which Sheila is Patron. In support of the same charity, the Isle of Man office ‘turned pink’ on 23 October for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Staff dressed in pink and baked cakes to sell to colleagues, which raised more than £580.

Children in Need recently saw our best bakers share their talents in the Jersey office, raising £144, while the Isle of Man office hosted a popular bottle raffle, raising £265, which was kindly matched pound for pound by Barclays. Bake sales in our Guernsey office also raised funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and Lepra.

During December, our European offices are focusing on charities which provide support for those in need over the Festive Season. Staff in the Isle of Man office have embraced Operation Christmas Child and filled a remarkable 69 shoe boxes with gifts and toys for underprivileged children across the world. The value of this impressive contribution from the staff has been matched by a donation of £1,035 worth of toys to the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal which ensures that every child receives a gift at Christmas. Similarly, staff in our Jersey office are donating £1 to dress down on Fridays during the month of December in aid of the Jersey Christmas Appeal which supports individuals in need at this time of year.

These are just some of the highlights from the past few months and a great deal more is planned for 2016. We will keep you posted on future success stories from across the Group.
